The Nicholas Green Scholarship Fund, is awarded to one student
in each state, along with a Certificate of Excellence by the NAGC.
Students selected for the award are between grades 3 and 6 and
have distinguished themselves in academic achievement, leadership,
or the visual or performing arts. The award program was established through funds provided
by Maggie and Reg Green to honor the memory of their seven-year-old
son, Nicholas, who was killed in a drive-by shooting while vacationing
in Italy in 1994. The Greens felt it was important to recognize
the gifts and talents in children who are now at the age that
Nicholas was when he died. NAGC is honored to be part of the Greens'
generous spirit. That the award exists is a tribute to the determination
of the Greens to take a terrible tragedy and turn it into a positive
force of recognition.
Nominations for the Minnesota NGDS Award for 2011 are now closed. Nominations for 2012 must be received by August 1, 2012. Mail application and parental release form to: Marty Hartmann , West 1101 Commerce Drive, Belle Plaine, MN 56011; (952) 873-2401 (w), (952) 873-4471 (h)

MEGT ANNOUNCING ITS 2011
Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award Winner

Roshini Asirvatham has been named the Minnesota winner of the National Association for Gifted Children 2011 Nicholas Green Distinguished Student Award. NAGC sponsors this award, which is designated to recognize excellence in young children. The award program was established by Maggie and Reg Green to honor the memory of their 7-year-old son, Nicholas, who was killed in a drive-by shooting while visiting in Italy in 1994. The Greens believe it is important to recognize gifts and talents in children who are now at the age that Nicholas was when he died. It is with great pleasure that we honor Roshini Asirvatham. She is the daughter of Samuel and Usha Asirvatham. Rashini (who was eleven at the time of nomination) attends Friedell Middle School in Rochester. Roshini has earned many awards for her academic excellence. The last three years Roshini has scored in the 99th percentile on the Explore, SAT and ACT tests receiving awards from NWU in Chicago and Minneapolis. Roshini was a participant in the regional and national spelling bees. Last year, as a ten year old, she advanced to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC. Roshini has participated for the last four years at the National Level in the North South Foundation academic competitions. These competitions help fund scholarships for underprivileged children in India. Roshini's present career choice is to be a cardiac electrophysiologist. Last year her History Day project was on the invention of the cardiac defibrillator. In this year's History Day competition, Roshini made a documentary on what she believes is the most historically relevant scientific debate-the nature of light, wave or particle, and thus of matter itself. She qualified at the state level representing Minnesota at National History Day, where she placed fifth. Roshini has also participated in science fair competitions for the last five years. Her project assessing an ancient yogic technique's ability to improve brain function was recognized with a first prize and gold medal at the Minnesota state science fair. She continues to inspire and amaze all those around her. Roshini clearly represents the type of ambassador and humanitarian that we hope and wish for in all our gifted students
The Minnesota Educators of Gifted and Talented are very pleased to name her as Minnesota's award winner. Roshini will receive a $500 U.S. Savings Bond and a certificate from NAGC. State winners across the country were selected for having distinguished themselves in academics, leadership, athletics, or the arts. The Minnesota Educators of the Gifted and Talented, an affiliate of NAGC, hosts the Nicholas Green Scholarship nomination and award process here in Minnesota. MEGT congratulates Roshini on her outstanding achievements.
